Universal Studios Japan, also known as USJ, isn’t a cheap weekend, but it’s a hot spot in Osaka, with thousands heading to the magic of Harry Potter with Shrek, Snoopy, Woody the Woodpecker World pilgrimage, sesame. Street and other gangs (including minions). International audiences from Spider-Man to Sesame Street, and the famous Japanese manga-themed rides across eight fantasy worlds spanning 140 acres will delight visitors of all ages in the Japanese incarnation of America’s premier theme park. Head to Jurassic Park or The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and experience thrilling rides, exciting special effects and blockbuster entertainment at Universal Studios Japan.
Since they’ve recently turned into a joy for Harry Potter (and theme park fans), we couldn’t miss Universal Studios Japan on our Osaka visit. While wandering the wizarding world of Harry Potter was the highlight of our day, we also rode the scariest roller coaster we’ve ever been on and discovered many other fun rides.
Universal Studios Japan is easily accessible by train from Osaka city center and takes less than 30 minutes. USJ is only 15 minutes by train from Osaka city center, so you can stay in the city center and visit USJ. The park is very crowded (even in February when we visited it), so it’s worth paying extra for an express pass.
In our experience, Universal Studios Japan is the busiest theme park on the planet, with high traffic and many hours of waiting for many attractions over many days. However, being one of the most popular theme parks in the world, you will encounter long lines for some of the attractions. While you can access all of the rides in the park with the regular Studio Pass, you will likely stand in A LOT of lines.
If you’re eligible for the 1.5- or 2-day Studio Pass, you’ll have much more time to navigate between all the rides you want. Getting around all of the park’s attractions with an express pass will certainly take a full day or two.
If you’re working full time and didn’t buy your tickets in advance, it’s best to arrive early as there can be long queues at the ticket office that opens an hour before the park opens. You must arrive at least 30 minutes before the official opening in order to get to the park as soon as possible and go straight to the Harry Potter, Flying Dinosaurs or Minions tours.
Tickets and universal express passes can be purchased at the counters at the park’s main entrance. The Universal Express Pass lets you skip the lines at the park’s most popular attractions. You can also buy USJ and Express Pass tickets at mini-market kiosks in Japan. In addition, some attractions (such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World) have timed entry tickets or numbered entrance tickets that you must obtain (free of charge) in advance via the official website or app.
While express passes are often sold out, regular tickets to Universal Studios Japan can also sell out on peak days, so if you don’t buy tickets before your trip, you should still show up an hour before the park opens. parking to buy them if you are driving there in summer, weekend or national holiday. If for some reason you do not wish to purchase your Universal Studios Japan tickets through Voyagin but would like to receive the Express Pass, we recommend that you arrive at the park at least an hour before opening so that you can purchase the Express Pass before it will end. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes on JR trains (so you can use the Japan Rail Pass throughout the journey). To visit this theme park, it is definitely worth taking the futuristic Japanese Shinkansen Express from Tokyo to Osaka.
From castles full of samurai stuff to the best food you’ll ever eat (okonomiyaki, ramen, gyoza, and more) to huge green spaces (think of Suita City Expo 70 Memorial Park) and hot spring theme parks open 24/7 (Spa World), Osaka has it all. Here we will give an overview of the park and mention the main attractions and areas.
Just outside the park gate is Universal Citywalk Osaka, a mall with several official Universal hotels, as well as a variety of restaurants and shops, including shops selling Universal Studios merchandise and Osaka souvenirs. If you don’t want to waste time in the park waiting in line for food, there are restaurants, shops and souvenir stalls on Universal City Walk Osaka just outside the gate. The Universal City Walk, right outside the park entrance, has some great restaurants.
Time stamped entrance tickets (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) Ask someone in your group to bring everyone in your group’s studio passes to the ticket office at the designated times in Central Park. The Royal Studio Pass is a physical ticket and wristband that must be sent to a hotel in Japan with concierge services.
Unfortunately, aside from the ridiculously priced Royal Studio Pass, none of the Express Pass 4 options cover all the top attractions. Of course, you can also play with the usual suspects like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Hollywood Dreams, Jurassic Park, 4K3D Spider-Man, Space Fantasy, and more. Time-limited entry to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, skip-the-line entry to six top attractions, unlimited skip-the-line and VIP entry to Waterworld and a live rock show by Universal Monsters.

As of March 2012, it contains three themed sub-zones including Snoopy Studios, Hello Kittys Fashion Avenue, and the Fun Zone on Sesame Street. Universal Studios Japan (yunibasarusutazioziyapan, Yunibasaru Sutajio Japan), based in Osaka, is one of six Universal Studios theme parks owned and operated by USJ LLC [3], which is wholly owned by NBCUniversal (as of 2017).
